Mums Reference Working Group
We work in partnership with all our local leaving care teams at Stockport, Trafford and Cheshire East. At Stockport we hold regular 'mums reference working group' sessions. We have a core team of seven which consists of our the SMBC leaving care team and young people.
The reference group look to meet up and talk about what issues really impact children who are leaving care, however, more importantly the group are empowered to help make changes to local support services.
The group is made up of mums (I know the give away was in the title) who have left care. The group has been going since March this year and already have discussed service improvement around:
Pre and Post birth assessments
Preventative measures when things get tough
What services are available - do they work? do we need more?
The group isn't just a talking shop, the discussions are fed into the wider local authority with the support of the leaving care team - generally through the SMBC quarterly meetings. We look for service improvements, we challenge (in a collaborative way) and we question. The group has already made a difference.
We also look for experiences from other mums (or dads) who may not want to be part of the working group, so if you have a voice and want to be heard please get in touch.
